MedicalNote Inc. (Minato-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director and CEO: Yuma Umeda; Representative Director: Sho Inoue;) has entered into a strategic partnership with CYBERDYNE Inc. (Tsukuba, Ibaraki; President and CEO: Yoshiyuki Sankai; from now on “CYBERDYNE”). The strategic partnership aims to help the patient select appropriate treatment methods by posting information on various diseases, such as progressive neuromuscular diseases.
Background of the strategic partnership
Progressive Neuro Muscular Diseases such as Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), Spinal and Bulbar Muscular Atrophy (SBMA), Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), Distal Myopathy, Inclusion Body Myositis (IBM), Congenital Myopathy, and Muscular Dystrophy are known to be diseases that are very difficult to cure, and an important issue is how to suppress the worsening of muscle weakness and atrophy of skeletal muscle. To approach this challenge, CYBERDYNE developed Medical HAL Lower Limb Type (generic name: biosignal-responsive motor function improvement device, hereafter referred to as “Medical HAL”). Medical HAL is already covered by insurance for these progressive neuromuscular diseases and is also used in clinical settings. In October 2023, treatment of Medical HAL has expanded to two new diseases, HTLV-1 associated myelopathy (“HAM”) and hereditary spastic paraplegia. When the Guide for Appropriate Use revision is completed, hospitals can seek reimbursement whenever HAL is used to treat such diseases.
Medical HAL is a unique system that utilizes a faint bio-electrical signal that leaks on the skin surface when a person tries to move their body. The sensor of Medical HAL reads information that reflects the person’s intention to move that is sent from the brain to the muscles. By repeating walking exercises while supporting the wearer’s movements according to the wearer’s intention, the walking function of the patient could be improved. Further effect is also hoped for through combination with pharmaceuticals.
Despite the potential of this new treatment method to control the progression of neuromuscular diseases, some patients are not benefiting from them because of a lack of information that reaches them.
